Meet Whitney

For Whitney Armstrong, Fort St. John has always been home. Born and raised here, she once thought city life might be the next chapter. At eighteen, she spent a year in a large city but found herself missing the things she’d always taken for granted: short commutes, familiar faces, quiet moments, and the sense of calm that comes from knowing where you belong.

It didn’t take long to realize that what she was looking for had been in Fort St. John all along.

“It is a comfortable and happy life. It is small, but it offers so much.”

Today, Whitney works as a Digital Marketing Manager, a role that keeps her closely connected to local businesses and industries across the community. Her days are a mix of office work, client visits, and time spent out in the community, a rhythm she values for its variety and connection.

Outside of work, life is full in quieter ways. Walks through neighbourhood trails with her husband and dog. Evenings are split between relaxing at home and volunteering with the Spark Women’s Leadership Conference. Weekends are filled with errands, game nights, dinners out, and time with close friends and family.

What’s surprised Whitney most is how her perspective has changed over time. Where she once imagined a future in a big city, she now finds herself appreciating the pace and balance Fort St. John offers.

“I used to dream of big city life, but now I cherish our town of familiar faces.”

Fort St. John, she says, isn’t rushed, but it isn’t slow either. It’s a place where you can build a career, enjoy your time, and still feel rooted. Affordability plays a role, but it’s the deeper connections that matter most.

Whitney spends her downtime exploring local shops, thrift stores, garden centres, and parks. Toboggan Hill Park is a favourite, offering walking trails, dog parks, and space to be outdoors year‑round. She also loves the lookout at the south end of 100th Street, a peaceful spot to take in views of the valley and river.

For those thinking about moving north, Whitney describes Fort St. John as the best of both worlds: the comfort and peace of a small town, paired with opportunity, amenities, and access to nature.

“You get the peaceful living of a small town, with the opportunities and amenities of a city.”

When asked what she couldn’t imagine living without here, her answer comes easily. Friends. Family. The people who have shaped her life, whether they planned to stay forever or thought they’d only be here for a few years.

It’s those relationships, built over time, that have made Fort St. John not just where Whitney lives, but where she belongs.
